Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why do members require a background check?

A. Your safety is, and always will be a serious concern at Parenting Mentors. Even though they can seem like a great invasion of privacy, background checks have their place of importance, and we believe are necessary to help ensure the safety of our members. We believe where children and families are involved, it's vital to know the background of those people into whose care, or friendship they are entrusted. Again, we will conduct criminal background checks on our members, however, not every report is 100% accurate. If you would like more information about someone, we recommend using the internet and government resources available to everyone. This can include typing the person's name into a search engine, reviewing public information made available by government offices, or using a paid service to obtain a full background report.

Q. Why haven't I received any emails from Parenting Mentors?

A. If you have not received any emails from us, please check your spam filter, and add our email address to your contact list.

Q. How do I know if becoming a mentor is right for me?

A. If you’ve been successful in raising emotionally healthy children, are an empty nester and find yourself needing a purpose, you’re likely a good candidate to join as a mentor. Plus, you’ll never know until you try!

Q. How do I know if I'm qualified to be a mentor?

A. You don't need a degree or special training to join our community as a mentor. If you are a parent, grandparent or guardian who has successfully raised happy and emotionally healthy children, and are looking to pass on that knowledge to other parents, grandparents or guardians who need support and parental guidance, you're absolutely qualified.

Q. Does mentoring happen online, in person, or both?

A. Once you have joined our community we'll help you connect with parents, grandparents or guardians who need your parental guidance. Initially, communication with others begins online. Once you begin to interact with other members, you can decide if things are a fit for you. If not, Parenting Mentors will continue to help you find the right fit. Then, if you're comfortable, you decide if you want to continue communication over the phone, or meet an individual in person.

Q. Can I connect with more than one parent or mentor at a time while using Parenting Mentors?

A. Of course. Our community is open for parents and mentors to connect with as many individuals as they feel necessary in order to find the right fit. While we don’t encourage our members to overextend themselves, we understand that every situation is different. Depending on each member’s experience, mentors can work with multiple parents/couples at one time, and parents/couples can work with multiple mentors at one time in order to address their individual needs.

Q. As a parent, can I connect with other parents, or am I limited to connecting only with mentors?

A. There are no limitations to who our members can connect with, whether they are parents, grandparents or guardians seeking mentors for parental guidance, or parents seeking companionship or friendship with other parents. Our goal is for all of our members to provide and receive positive parenting advice in a fun and safe community environment.

Q. How do I know if I'm getting access to the best mentor for me and my child?

A. It's important for you to be through when filling out your profile. The information you give us when you subscribe will help us to match you up with the best possible mentor, friend or companion for you and your child.

Q. What if I'm not happy with the mentor, but I like the service, can I switch mentors?

A. Absolutely. You are not obligated to continue communications with someone that may not be the right fit for you and your family’s needs. You could potentially connect with multiple mentors before selecting the right one for your situation. It’s important for you to decide if the person, or couple we connect you with is a good fit. As long as you are a subscriber, you can connect with whomever you feel can provide the best parental guidance for you and your family. That’s the importance, and advantage of keeping your subscription current.

Q. What if I don't think the parent is a match for me, can I ask for another parent to mentor?

A. Yes. Both the parents, grandparents, guardians and mentors have the freedom to choose what feels right for their expertise, or situation. We want both parties to feel comfortable and satisfied with the connection so that the relationship is beneficial for both. You can switch as many times as you'd like, as long as you are a subscriber. That's the importance, and advantage of keeping your subscription current. You may even mentor more than one parent/couple at a time; however, we don't recommend overextending yourself. We want mentors, parents, grandparents and guardians to develop a mutually constructive and positive relationship.

Q. I would prefer to remain anonymous. Do I have to provide my name and personal details?

A. When you subscribe, we will connect you with parents/grandparents/mentors based on your profile. Your name and information will remain anonymous until you decide to connect with someone and let them know who you are and more about you.

Q. Will I receive specific answers to my parenting problems?

A. The answers you receive will be based on the experience of the mentor you choose. All of our mentors have had success using different parenting methods that work, but because every situation is different, you may receive different answers/advice from each mentor you work with.

Q. What do I do if another member acts inappropriately, and makes me feel uncomfortable?

A. You can block a specific member and report concerns about suspicious or inappropriate activity anonymously from any profile page, email or IM window on the Parenting Mentors website.
